The Institute of Radiation Emergency Medicine (IREM) has a cooperation agreement with the Department of Physics and Chemistry of the University of Strasbourg. Four students from the Hirosaki University Graduate School of Health Sciences (Haruka Kuwata; D2, Yuisa Kitayama; M1, Michika Kon; M1, and Yuna Sakai; M1) participated in a European Summer School at the University of Strasbourg, France, from July 1 to 5, 2024. There were 35 participants from 15 countries attending the summer school this year, under the theme of Radiation Measurement and Radiochemistry in the Environment and Decommissioning, with 17 lectures from 4 countries and 19 poster presentations, including 4 students from IREM. In addition, the 7 practical topics related to this year’s theme were provided, and students were divided into groups to undergo practical training and present their obtained results. The Summer School also included a program for visiting the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany, where research on radioactive waste management and accelerator research was presented and the facilities visited.
Although the language barrier was confusing at first, the daily experience of interacting with international students in our institute and assisting at international seminars, workshops, and conferences helped us gradually get to know students, teachers, and researchers from other institutions. Students gained a lot of experience through intercultural exchanges with students and teachers from different countries.
