Prof. Dr. Shinji Tokonami (Director of IREM) and Dr. Hirofumi Tazoe (Associate Professor, Department of International Cooperation and Collaborative Research) attended the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) TC147 meeting held in Rovaniemi, Finland, on April 20 and 21, 2023. At this meeting, the sub-committee (SC3) consisted of experts from various countries to develop international standards for water quality analysis, especially radiation measurement. Members from Japan, France, Canada, Korea, and Germany attended the meeting in person, while experts from the United Kingdom, the United States, Norway, Italy, and India participated online.
Prof. Tokonami chaired Working Group 15 on Liquid scintillation counting and proportional counting. He reported on the progress of revising existing standards and discussed future plans with foreign experts. In Working Group 14, new standards for ICP mass spectrometry are under development. Dr. Tazoe, project leader for the Sr-90 analysis method by ICP-MS, reported the progress and discussed revisions for submission of a draft international standard (DIS). Analytical methods based on these international standards are expected to make a significant contribution by being used in radioactivity surveys.
