The Department of Radiation Measurement Physical Dosimetry in IREM has initiated a project to investigate exposure to radon for the public in Kazakhstan in collaboration with Hiroshima University, Ibaraki Prefectural University of Health Sciences, Astana Medical University, and L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University. Kazakhstan is one of the most resource-rich countries in the world, and the management of radiation exposure associated with resource development will become important in the future. Dr. Omori visited Aksu village in Kazakhstan to deploy radon detectors in houses. Aksu village is adjacent to a uranium mining site, and there are concerns about exposure to radon for residents. Annual mean radon concentrations are measured by the radon detectors which were developed by Prof. Tokonami, the Director of the IREM. With the cooperation of Astana Medical University, we also started a similar survey in Nur-Sultan, the capital of Kazakhstan. This is the first time to perform such a long-term survey regarding indoor radon in Kazakhstan. It is expected to yield important results for Kazakhstan and other countries involved in resource development.
