The International Radiation Science Collaboration Center fostered a vibrant global dialogue on August 27, 2025, hosting a special seminar on one of the most pressing challenges in energy science: nuclear waste disposal.
The event, entitled “Nuclear Waste Disposal Strategies: Perspectives from Local and Global-Scale Environmental Monitoring,” featured distinguished expert Dr. Haruko Murakami Wainwright from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Dr. Wainwright holds a unique joint appointment in the departments of Nuclear Science and Engineering and Civil and Environmental Engineering, bringing a valuable interdisciplinary perspective to the topic.
Held in a hybrid format to maximize accessibility, the seminar connected an in-person audience of 21 students, faculty, and staff with 7 online participants from various locations. The atmosphere was both insightful and engaging, with Dr. Wainwright’s presentation punctuated by moments of humor that sparked laughter and created a warm, collaborative environment.
The conversation continued into a dynamic Q&A session, where our students demonstrated their keen understanding of the subject matter by posing thoughtful and incisive questions. This led to a lively, in-depth exchange of ideas on the technical and environmental complexities of long-term disposal strategies.
The International Radiation Science Collaboration Center remains committed to its mission of providing a world-class platform for knowledge sharing. We look forward to continuing to invite leading researchers from Japan and abroad to inspire our academic community and tackle global challenges together.
